But it's the pretty neighborhoods that I grew to loathe. Naturally, they are full of tourists and, as a result, attract hordes of touts constantly harassing you at every street corner. I've been through this in other countries, but in Havana the touts seemed to be a lot more persistent and pushy.

The buildings are run down and in need of a serious makeover. But in my eyes this seeming ugliness is actually a decaying beauty. So if you ever find yourself in Havana, leave the tourist hell behind to enjoy the real deal.
