First timers don't ride standing up. We had to lie on the board (belly down), hold on to the straps, keep our legs wide open and lifted in the air. This is key to staying alive.
In the only video account that survived, you can see me using my feet to slow down. That helped to make the landing softer. But if you happen to have padded undies with pads on the front - then fear not those bumpy landings.
